The fact that extreme Right-wing crypto-fascist, crypto-racist parties like the BNP in England and NPD in Germany aren’t too off far from being the 4th most popular parties (actually BNP already is, in England) in those countries is pretty frightening. Apparently, they’re trying to ban NPD in Germany because the government says it has Nazi sympathies…

I think it’s easier for them to organize in Europe because of less ground to cover and later waves of immigration. The thing that scares me in the States is the whole “lobster in a slowly boiling pot of water” metaphor. In our lifetimes, the US seems to have been moving further to the Right on the whole and certainly gotten much more xenophobic. But I doubt that pot will boil over soon and there’s still hope it won’t at all. I guess the silver lining about Obama and the Dems moving to the Center is maybe it’ll help them win and moderate things enough to halt the continued run away from any policy that even hints at being “liberal” or “European”.

The sad thing is after being around and reading up, I still think the US might be- if not the least- certainly in the Top 5 least racist countries in the world and look at all the issues we still have…

I will hand it to Europe that at least they acknowledge that racism exists- the Republican party seems to think that disappeared four decades ago and sexism only started existing when someone first criticized Sarah Palin.

In conclusion, Billy Bragg said it best (singing Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded words) : “All you fascists are bound to lose.”

Those are all bad things, but they’re hardly real fascism as an organized political movement.

I count anyone seeking to restrict our constitutional freedoms as a fascist or fascist sympathizer. This includes Bush’s wiretapping without warrant, religious groups who want to tell me what to think or do, rascists, and maybe even big-money interests working against the working man. The price of freedom and equality is constant vigilence and resistance to these forces, which I do not consider vanquished or even routed.
